Defending White Appliances

I grew up in a house with a country kitchen and white appliances, so I'm a bit nostalgic for them.  Don't get me wrong, I love me some stainless steel appliances. But, every now and again I feel a bit sorry for the bad rep white appliances have been stuck with over the past decade or so.  What does everyone have against white appliances anyhow? I've heard them called 'outdated'..but I'm not entirely convinced.
After all, there are also some real head turners on the market today that look contemporary due to their clean lines and design. Nowadays, white appliances can be sleek, shiny and slim, perhaps making you rethink your next appliance purchase.

^ I first fell back in love with white appliances during this episode of Sarah 101, when Sarah and Tommy used white appliances to blend quietly into the cabinetry. Love the crisp lines of this oven. Can you believe that white range hood?

^ White appliances seem to work best with white cabinetry, as they blend in nicely rather than stand out. Also, having the fridge 'disappear' into your cabinets allows other details to shine!

^ I'm personally not a fan of the floors in this kitchen, but I love the way the white appliances allow the room to mix metallics, both silver and gold, in an even and balanced way.

^ This one might be my fave of all. The appliances look relatively standard and affordable, but don't detract from the room's beauty one bit! In fact, I think that the greys in the Carrara marble backsplash stand out more than they would against a similarly grey-toned stainless oven.

Truth be told, I'd still probably choose stainless steel nine out of ten times, but it just goes to show you that sometimes sticking to a classic is, well...classic! Poor white appliances need someone to stick up for them now and again (plus, I think finger prints might be less noticeable!).

I wonder if avocado green or harvest gold will ever make a comeback. My Babcia (Polish for Grandma) still has one of those beauties.

What do you think about white appliances?

Great post Tiffany. There are people out there that don't want stainless, so there are wonderful testimonies to great design in white. Have a great week.

i like white appliances. However, in the past...mine have yellowed over time. If they could hold the true white then i'm fine with it.

This is a fun post! Your right they don't get nearly the credit they deserve! I would probably still get stainless, mainly for resale value, but I can appreciate them. I love the first kitchen! Sarah Richardson never let's me down.

they make for a clean crisp space...and they work with an all white kitchen for sure. But I think they don't work as well with other cabinet colors. But you are right white will always be a classic!

All white, cabinets and appliances work! Love the look. I read over the weekend that they are officially coming Back! I agree, if they do, the cabinets will have to be white!!

It's funny to think the white appliance is almost a retro thing now. I am still a fan of the all white thing in "clean" rooms like the laundry and kitchen! Great photos to showcase your thoughts! My rental has pink tiles in the kitchen and bathroom... OMG they are quite the head turners but I think I would keep them in even if I owned the house!

Happy Tuesday lady! These are fab. Yes, stainless is all the rage but there are so many other ways to make a fab kitchen. I used a clients existing off white appliances for a major kitchen renovation a few years ago because her appliances were pretty new. No need to spend a bundle on stainless.

I'll admit, I don't like white appliances. I'll take black appliances over white appliances and stainless steel over any of the above. In fact, I will go as far to say that I won't buy anything other than stainless steel for my own use. (Our rental is a different story...)

All that said, all of these inspiration photos you posted are absolutely gorgeous, even the last one that uses simple, standard white appliances. I would take any of those kitchens, white appliances and all! :D

I just came across this blog as I was searching white appliances. Love the pic of the kitchen via pinterest that has all white. Even down to the white knobs on the rangetop. We are getting ready to begin renovations on an 1800s farmhouse & I have decided on a white refrigerator. I love the idea of it blending in the with the cabinetry. It is not meant to be the center piece of this kitchen. I agree that white has gotten a bad wrap. I also didn't enjoy trying to keep a stainless steel refrigerator clean with two small children and a dog. Ugh! Great post.
