Style Staple: The Baseball Cap

A baseball ball cap is one of my trusty go-to's when the hair is bad or when it's drizzling outside and I need to keep the rain out of my face while I bike. But lately I've been rocking the ball cap even on good hair, sunny days. In the days of boyfriend jeans, watches and shirts, who can deny the adorableness of a girl showing off her tomboy side? It adds the perfect touch of masculinity to an otherwise feminine outfit, and even pairs well with classics tailored pieces.

Currently Learning: Sketch-Up

This term we are finally learning to use Google Sketch-Up! I am so in love, even though I'm just a newbie. I would describe it as Sims for adults. Let's be real - even as a child all I ever did on Sims was build and decorate the houses. Anyone else? Basically this has been consuming all of my time this week so I thought I would share my progress with you guys. This term my studio project is retail design, and I'm designing a clothing retail shop including designing all of the branding. I called my line 'Mint' and am bringing it together in 3D! Here are some 'work in progress' shots:

My favourite touch has got to be the mint candy wallpaper that I custom designed for the store.
The 'i' on my logo is dotted with the same candy. So presh!

My Lazy Zebra

Sometimes you can experience a happy accident while antiquing, and stumble upon something you didn't even know you were looking for! This happened to me yesterday. I was in Waterloo for the day and decided to hit up my favourite antique mall after running my errands.
I went into a booth I almost never glance at because it's filled mostly with toys -  and wam, bam, thank you maam I saw and fell in love with the cutest little ceramic zebra for $7! He came home with me and is providing a happy update to my coffee table styling:

Throw Back Thursday: Bohemian Treehouse

Alright guys, a long time ago I shared a treehouse styling makeover. When I shared the post, I didn't have very many followers. When I look back at the comments though, it warms my heart to see some of the people who have supported me from the very beginning! Big hugs to those wonderful women.
Recently this treehouse has been getting some Pinterest action, so I thought maybe it was time to share it again with the followers who have since joined the Tiffany Leigh community.

Back story:
When I was a bratty angelic youth, I used to run away sometimes. This treehouse in my backyard is where I would go and threaten to live for the rest of my life. Total bad ass, I know. Back in those days, it was fairly uninhabitable and my moving out usually lasted about twenty minutes (felt like an eternity though!).

Two summers ago, I felt that I needed this space as an escape again and decided to style it as a bohemian style reading retreat. It was in a sad state (hadn't been used in years) but I managed to breath some new life into it:

Watercolor Wednesday

I've been slacking on Watercolor Wednesday the past few weeks and I've been missing it as a de-stresser. Lately I've been feeling very anxious and have been waking up with a sore jaw. Have any of you experienced this? I consulted Dr.Google (I know they advise against this but he gives such great diagnostics and usually leads one to believe they are dying of multiple ailments...I need this heads up!!) and apparently sore jaw in the morning means you are clenching or grinding your teeth at night. I do NOT like the sounds of that one bit. Hopefully the cottage this week will help me relax.

Anyways, I painted this on Monday and woke up considerably less sore on Tuesday. I've said it before, but painting really is a mind clearing process. While it's not a perfect painting, it is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Today's watercolor is inspired by a vignette from the amazingly fierce Kelly Wearstler. Girl kills it EVERY.DAMN.TIME. She is fearless in her designs, and I admire her so much.

The Tale of Two Sittings: Double Seating Areas

FYI The English major in me loves the cheesy title of today's post...
I love the idea of having a living room with more than one seating area.Obviously you need a lot of room to achieve this, but it feels so refined and charming. One for lounging, one for having intimate conversations by the fire...the combinations are endless really!

I love the top two images with the chaise or bench dividing the space, they have my heart. It's a clever furniture choise because the chaise can be used for either sitting area as it is open on both sides. Windsor Smith's use of the back to back sofa is pretty neat too. What do you all think?

Coffee Shop Atmosphere: Inspiration Station

Recently in my retail design class, we learned that people tend to be more inspired, creative, and get more work done in a coffee shop environment than in a quiet office.
Research suggests that it is the chatter and noises of the coffee shop that actually allow us to focus and think outside the box. In fact, one company, Coffitivity, allows you to stream the noises of a coffee shop into your home or office to help you get down to business (I think I'm going to try this!).

Lately, I've been having a bad case of writer's block. I decided to come to a coffee shop to test out this info and write a blog post, and voila, here I am typing away, inspired by the very thing itself!
But it has me wondering...is it really just the sounds, or is it the space itself?
I absolutely love coffee shop decor. It tends to be homey, inviting, industrial, warm, and has that subtle hipster vibe that allows you to unleash your inner creative soul.  Here is a look at some inspiring spaces:

I personally think that it is the entire atmosphere, overall, that inspires coffee shop goers. Therefore, the sounds themselves might not be enough when we are in our own private space. Why not carve out a little coffee shop nook in our own homes? I've put together a mood board below to help you capture the vibe without breaking the bank!

-The key to capturing that coffee shop essence is in a chalkboard with creative typeface. If you're good at this sort of thing, buy a chalkboard and get going! If not, you can cheat with this etsy poster by Lily & Val.
-Repurpose the ever popular barcart with coffee grinds, pretty teacups, fresh flowers and an espresso machine or coffee maker.
-Create bistro style seating with iconic wishbone chairs (or reproductions) and my fave, the DOCKSTA table from IKEA.
-An industrial style pendant lamps are often used in coffee shops. This one from IKEA is affordable and looks good.
-Couldn't leave out the SS Print Shops adorable new print "Stop and Smell the Peonies". An inspiring message for an inspiring little nook!
